Merritt

With a population of 7200 situated in the Nicola Valley on the traditional, ancestral and unceded territory of the Nlaka’pamux and Syilx people, Merritt has a strong forest sector that plays a vital role in the local economy. The city is the home to many mills such as Tolko Industries, Aspen Planers, and Pine Ideas.

Forestry in Merritt provides employment opportunities for residents and supports the growth of the community. In addition to traditional logging and sawmilling activities, the region also embraces value-added wood processing, such as engineered wood and wood pellet production. These secondary processing facilities maximize the utilization of harvested timber, reduce waste, and create additional economic benefits.

While Merritt’s forestry industry brings economic benefits, there is a strong commitment to sustainable forestry practices and environmental stewardship. The industry prioritizes responsible logging techniques, reforestation efforts, and the conservation of wildlife habitats and sensitive ecosystems. This approach aims to balance economic development with environmental considerations, ensuring the long-term sustainability of the forests and the industry.

About Forestry Friendly Communities BC

Forestry Friendly Communities was started in 2016 as a way to celebrate the proud history and rich future of BC’s coast forest sector.  The term “Forestry Friendly” is intended to recognize pride in, and an ongoing commitment to BC’s forestry sector. In fact, the forest sector supports 1 in 16 jobs in BC. It also contributes $12.4 billion to the provincial GDP and injects $2.5 billion in taxes and fees to the three levels of government.

For more than a century, the forest sector has fueled our coastal economy and shaped our communities. Today, people and businesses across BC’s coastal region depend on transportation networks and other services developed for our forest sector. Families are able to earn a living while enjoying a unique West Coast lifestyle.

Forestry Friendly Communities is proudly brought to you by companies and associations working in forestry in coastal BC.
